So Cool to be Back in School!!

Welcome Back!

I'm looking forward to a new school year with a new group of fantastic fifth graders! I hope you are all as excited as I am!

This year we are going to be talking about GROWTH MINDSET, a lot, as a way of changing our vocabulary and attitude about learning.

STEM project

We finished our last FULL day of school off with a STEM project. (STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math)

This is something I'd like to incorporate into my classroom next year, but these 5th graders were happy to be my guinea pigs! 🐖

Their task today was to build a tower that could be both tall AND strong. Their tower had to hold a cup and must be built out of straws, tape and string. They were also allowed to use scissors and a single hole punch. Each group had 150 straws and 1 cup. After the towers were complete we put jelly beans into each towers cup, one at a time, and counted how much each tower could hold.

And boy, did they deliver!

Here's some pictures during the build.

The Final Countdown

Our fantastic fifth graders are soon-to-be sensational sixth graders! It's hard to believe                     but tomorrow is our FINAL day!

Now, your usually lovely teacher (me) may be            looking alot like this during this week,

but there's no need to make fun.

The end has come and even though I may look like poor bugs bunny, ⬆ I really will miss all my grade 5s!

We have been having lots of fun the last few days getting ready to wrap up the year and celebrate Canada's 150th birthday!

It is so special for our class to celebrate this momentous milestone for Canada since we have spent the whole year learning all about Canada's history and it's growth into such a diverse nation.

Our whole a school dressed in Red and White and took a roof top picture to celebrate Canada's 150th!

Our class is the left hand column of the 1!
                                   See us!?

The grade 5s also had the opportunity to show off how fantastic they are by being leaders at the gr. 1-3 Play Day! They were running play stations and being group leaders.. and they may have had some fun too!

Local reservoir - TilleyB

Bassano Dam

We are inquiring all about our local water for our Wetlands Unit so that we can understand why water is so important and why we should be protecting it.

Our area doesn't get alot of precipitation so our local residents rely on water taken from the Bow River that stems from the Rocky Mountains.

The Eastern Irrigtaion District controls the amount of water taken from the Bow River at the Bassano Dam and sends it all across our area. 1,200 irrigation farmers receive their water through a system of 4,800 kilometers of canals and drains and thirteen storage reservoirs.

The system also supplies water to all the industry, wet land habitat projects, towns and villages in the area, serving a population base of 18,000 people.

YeeeHaawww!

                     It's rodeo weekend y'all!
We had a hoot n' hollerin' good time today for our Western Day and rodeo events outside.
Have a fun and safe rodeo weekend everybody!

Read, Relax, Repeat

Our classroom was so hot and the day was so nice, we thought we would take our books outside!

Talk Show Interviews

These fantastic fifth graders are working on typing out interview questions and answers!
We have some very famous people coming in for interviews. All types of celebrities, from YouTubers and singers to sports stars!

Bet you didn't know we were so well connected!

Ok...ok!
So all these famous people won't ACTUALLY be visiting our classroom but with our amazing writing and flashy talk show studio, you'd never know the difference!

Ok...ok!
So we don't ACTUALLY have a flashy news studio BUT we do have a.....
GREEN SCREEN and an IPAD!

We are testing out a new app called Touchcast Studio and with our fancy greenscreen (ok!.. I got it at the dollar store! Jeez...) we can record our talk show interviews and have it look like we are sitting IN a studio.

Pretty slick, right?!

Keep posted to see how 'taping' goes!

Underground to Canada

We have just finished our class novel of Underground to Canada where a young slave called Julilly and her mother, Mammy Sally, are sold apart when their owner, Massa Hensen falls ill. Julilly is taken to a plantation in Mississippi in the Deep South. There she meets Liza, another slave girl. Pursued by their master, the two girls and their friends, Lester and Adam, begin their escape from slavery. They make their way through the United States to Canada on the Underground Railroad with the help of Alexander Milton Ross, a Canadian abolitionist, eventually arriving safely, apart from Adam who dies of blood poisoning caused by his slave chains.

This story introduced students to an important topic, some sensitive issues, and a dark part of our human history. The students handled the discussions with compassion and easily identified with the characters in our story. We are currently  working on our final project! Here's a sneak peak of one of our presentations!

Alka-seltzer Rockets: REDO

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!

We adjusted our materials for our experiment and went back outside to
test our hypothesis!
(We got a little wet, but scientists don't mind a little rain!)

We still found certain types of film canisters that 'couldn't take the pressure' BUT we found a couple canisters that sealed all the gas given off from the chemical reaction. Those rockets allowed the pressure of that gas to build inside the sealed canister until it finally POPPED! Some of our rockets launched higher than the basket ball nets! It was very rewarding and exciting to see those ones lift off.

 The Polygon Song
We are learning about 2D and 3D shapes in Math and found a fun song to help us remember the names of polygons (Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all the lines connect up).)

Click on the title to check it out!

   Aloha!

Hawaii had some very interesting weather! The climate and weather patterns on Hawaii are a surprise to most visitors. For example, did you know that the Big Island has a wet and a dry side? That there is a hurricane season? And that some months are far more rainy than others? It wasn't just sunshine and beaches!

The Big Island is actually on five shield volcanoes that overlap one another. The oldest is the Kohala volcano, which is already an extinct (dead) volcano. Two other dormant (sleeping) volcanoes came after one another; that is, Mauna Kea and Hualalai.

The two active volcanoes (still giving off lava) in the Big Island are Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Kilauea is quite an active volcano. On the other hand, Mauna Loa is one of the biggest volcanoes in the whole world, extending into the Pacific Ocean, and is also still active. These two exhibit continuous lava flow, making the Big Island always bigger.

When a volcano erupts, it can cause a lot of big weather changes. Ash from the explosion can be carried through the air, covering nearby land. The eruption can cause tsunamis, floods, and mudslides.

Hurricane season in Hawaii is from June through November, with almost all the activity happening from July to September.  However, the Hawaiian islands themselves rarely experience more serious weather than lots of rain and large surf.

This is because the volcanoes on the Big Island act as natural protection against hurricanes. Their high peaks affect wind circulation and help break up and weaken the storm as it moves toward and over the Big Island.

Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 - 1893) The flag was designed at the request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and blue that represent the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British.

Alka-seltzer Rockets: Fail

Today our fifth graders experienced some exciting experiment failure.

Hey...it happens sometimes!

We still learned about chemical reactions and had fun!
We know what to do better next time!

Sidewalk Scoot

SCOOT! SCOOT! SCOOT!

Yesterday we had a math quiz, and since spring is in the air, we did our quiz outside!

We did a sidewalk scoot with Mrs. Krochel's crew! I had a wonderful parent volunteer help with writing the division questions on the sidewalk before we took the 5th graders outdoors with pencils and paper to write their test. The kids 'scooted' along the sidewalk squares and answered the question on each square.
